Clicker Training for Dogs
Basic Clicker Lessons
Clicker Training Rules
There aren't a lot of rules to follow, and some may be difficult to understand at first. As you practice and watch your dog - and make mistakes - you will begin to understand the value and purpose of each rule. By following the rules, you will give your dog a clear understanding of your expectations.
The list below includes only my own interpretations of the rules and are explained as they have worked for me, through many dogs, many working titles in several dog sports, and many High In Trial awards.
For a complete list of the original "Clicker Training Laws" as explained by Karen Pryor, refer to her book Dog and a Dolphin.
- The clicker is always followed by a treat.
- Treats, whether in the form of food or toy, are always something the dog will work for.
- The command is almost never added until the behavior is reliably repeated at each opportunity.
- Always attain each smallest component of a behavior before adding the next component.
- Always introduce distractions in controlled environments and only at levels the dog is able to overcome at his present level.
- Use variable reinforcement to intensify the performance of a behavior.
- Use variable reinforcement to extinguish a desired behavior.
- Always end training sessions with a successful dog even if doing so means going back to a "beginner" behavior.
